Charlotte Takes the Lead

$4.00

Watercolor and pastel on paper. 21”x28”. ©2019.

All items shipped flat.

The front shoe represents Charlotte Emily Olney French, who was the first woman to successfully cast a vote in a Washington Territorial election on June 6, 1870. This event sparked further successful votes and a total of 15 ballots by women were successfully approved that day in Washington Territory. I chose shoes as a representation of these women as a reminder of the endless campaigning on foot from door to door and through the streets. Their shoes carried them through it all. The modern “I voted” sticker is purposely added as a message to current voters.

Previously shown at the Gallery at the Park "HerStory" art show (February 2020), and the Fuller Art Lodge "Color Outside the Lines" show (October/November 2020).
